About this coffee
This coffee lot is specially prepared by Cultivar, the exporter. They selected the coffees with the most daring, unexpected and fun notes that we they tasted this last year. They could have given it several names, but found a perfect one for it: Carnaval. Cajamarca region in Peru, best known for its dairy products and, of course, its coffees. But also it is known for its carnavals in February. The “Carnaval Cajamarquino” is one of the happiest and most anticipated festivals in the entire country. It has its origin in the 1930s and has evolved to this day.
This lot consists of coffee from four different farmers. In Peru, the word “don” in the case of men and “doña” in the case of women was used before as a symbol of respect. Today, in some parts of the country, especially in the provinces, these words are still used to refer to older people or those who are experts in some subject. In el Sector el Campo, Carlos Vega is better known as “Don Vega”. Don Vega is a benchmark in coffee cultivation. Young and old come to him when they need some advice for their farms and coffee commercialization. Don Vega’s opinion definitely weighs heavily on his neighbours.
Celso Carrasco and Delma have also contributed to the lot. Celso and Delma were born and raised in Sector el Campo, they have known each other since they were children. They got married 21 years ago and nowadays have 2 sons of 24 and 20 years. In 2010 Delma’s brothers, who worked as laborers in next communities realized that coffee grows in high altitudes and in cold weathers, so they carried 1000 coffee seedlings to their farm and planted them on Delma’s land. Happily, some years after they managed to harvest their first coffee cherries, other neighbors also decided to do the same. Currently Celso and Delma have 3 hectares of coffee and produce one of the best coffees in the area. They grow coffee in association with native and local trees to provide shade and to take advantage of their fruits.
The coffees in this lot have been fermented for longer time (>48 hours) than usual for most coffees (18 – 24 hours) in Peru. It results in a quite different cup to most washed Peruvian coffees, with more pronounced fruit notes – expect a sweet cup with flavours of plum, apple syrup and salted caramel.
