About this coffee
Hendra Maulizar has been the pioneer of Indonesian specialty coffee processing. His dad, Hamdan, moved to Aceh in 2006 and started growing coffee. This sparked the idea of Hendra to start growing coffee in 2010.
The land originally covered 1 hectare and has since expanded to 10 hectares, producing 40 tonnes of coffee at the washing station. Hendra and his family began to grow their farm and invested in post-harvesting facilities, eventually building a wet mill, gravitational washing channels, and raised beds to dry the coffee. Out of his 40 hectares of land, he also partnered with 70 local farmer families to help him produce cherries that Hendra would process.
We sourced this coffee through our friend Jeremy, the founder of Kopi Fabriek, who started working with Hendra to finally represent one of the best coffees Indonesia has to offer. A remarkable achievement for them came when one of Hendra’s coffees was awarded the 7th place in Indonesia’s Cup of Excellence in 2021.
This is a unique lot of a single variety, the Abyssinia. Abyssinia coffee comes from Ethiopian heirloom varieties cultivated in Indonesia, known for their vibrant floral aromas, bright citrus notes, and refined sweetness. Hendra first cultivated the Abyssinia varietals back in 2006 and now continuously breeds this variety onwards. He is now experimenting with 8-10 different processing methods. This lot is processed using the anaerobic washed method, where the coffee undergoes fermentation in sealed, oxygen-free tanks before being fully washed and dried.
We didn’t cup Jeremy’s coffee with the intention of looking for a festive coffee, but as soon as we sipped Hendra’s one, we knew that we had found the perfect one. Expect clear hints of spices like ginger and cardamom, acidity reminiscent of lemongrass, and sweetness from gingerbread. A coffee to celebrate!
